Waxham is a remote and unspoiled village about 30 minutes east of Norwich (two and half hours from London). The landscape is where the Norfolk Broads coincide with some of the most magnificent beaches: miles of sandy beaches backed by wild and grass covered dunes. The most notable building is Waxham Great Barn, the longest ancient barn in Norfolk at 56m, built in the late 16th century by the Woodhouse family. The barn sits within a wider and fascinating historical context of Waxham Hall and the church of St. John.
Shangri-La House: A Unique Eco-Friendly Beach Retreat
Shangri-la is a unique Norfolk beach house nestled between a series of Grade 1 buildings and arguably Norfolk’s best beach (as described in the Telegraph). The house itself was designed by Mole architects and features stunning interiors with light filled rooms. What’s more, you can be assured your stay at Shangri-la, Waxham is eco-friendly: the building was constructed to the demanding PassivHaus standard. If all of that wasn’t enough, we are dog friendly with a large and secure dog enclosure.
Waxham Beach: A Secluded Coastal Paradise
Waxham has the beach of your dreams. The isolated location, with no formal parking, means that the beach is rarely busy, even in the summer. Outside of the summer it is not unusual to have the beach to yourself. Walk in one direction for a short while and you arrive at the Blue Flag beach of Sea Palling. Walk in the other direction and for large parts of the year you will see the famous Horsey seals, many hundreds of which can be found on the beach within a few kilometres of Waxham.
